Solitary Sky by Shannon Taylor Hodnett

Leaving home wasn’t a hard decision for Lilah. She could either spend her senior year in Gentian with her grandmother who talked to dogs…or stay home with her hopeless mother who preferred dating them. 300 miles later, Lilah barely had time to unpack before she ran into Hunter–the literal guy of her dreams. Falling in love with him wasn’t an option…but would she be able to deny what seemed destined? Or how she was drawn to him…even knowing he and his brothers were something more than human?

For Lilah it was too late to turn back. She’d been caught up in a strange new world that was now her own…but she was unaware of a darker secret that remained hidden, lying in wait to destroy her new found happiness…and her life.

The author has rated this book PG (not necessarily suitable for children).

“Gram, we need to talk.”

“Sure, Babygirl. What is it ?”

I opened my mouth and the flood gates burst open. I spilled about everything—Dusky’s… meeting Hunter…the way I melted when he said my name…how good it felt to be in his arms…and how I freaked when I realized that he was the one from my vision.

“Lilah, your visions are a blessing, they won’t ever lead you the wrong way. They’ll lead you where you’re meant to be.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of.”

“Oh, honey, don’t be afraid of love.”

“I’m not ready,” I said, endlessly twisting noodles onto my fork. “It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.”

“Love isn’t supposed to happen any way. It’s not something you can prepare for. It’ll show up whether you think you’re ready or not. You can’t control love any more than you can control which way the wind blows.”

“It’s not fair. I should get to choose when, or if I ever fall in love.” I said, finally shoving the tangled ball of noodles into my mouth.

“Oh, but you will.”

“What? Gram, you’re making no sense.” My words came out garbled by a mouthful of pasta.

“When you fall in love with someone—even you don’t think you’re ready, or you hate the idea—there is a part of you that knows the timing is right. Any boy you can’t stop thinking about is in your head for a reason. He’s your destiny.”

“That would sound great on a greeting card, Gram…but it’s not reality.”

“Are you calling me a liar?”

“No, of course not…but your destiny theory doesn’t apply to everyone. Look at Claire.”

“She’s a whole different story. She expects to fall in love with every man she dates. She’s always been that way. Every time she’d meet someone new, I’d try to tell her to take things slowly, but she’d just say, ‘Mama, he’s the one—I know it.’”

“How could she be so naive?”

“More like a hopeless romantic. She’s obsessed with the idea of being in love instead of finding the man who deserves her love. She doesn’t realize what a precious gift that love is.”

“I don’t want to make her mistakes. I don’t want to think I’m in love only to end up hurt and looking like an idiot.”

She lifted her hand to my chin and softly turned my face toward hers.

“Listen to me, Miss Lilah—you are not Claire. You’re not gonna follow her same path—and not because you avoid her steps, but because you make your own.” She laid her hand over mine. “Don’t let your fear stand in the way of the love you deserve. Give Hunter a chance. He was the one you saw in your vision, he might be the one worth taking a chance on.”
