Almost Paradise by Laurie Hanan

Summary:

Meet the unorthodox heroine, a mail carrier in Hawaii named Louise Goldstein. Louise is not the ever-confident and totally competent sleuth. In fact, she is trying to live an uneventful, low-commitment life, when her concern for an elderly lady on her delivery route pulls her into a mystery with abductions, car tails, a celebrity pool party, exotic dancing, smuggling of artifacts, and of course, murder.

Life in Hawaii is not all picture-postcard perfect and tranquil days at the beach. In fact when things settle down and Louise slips into a hot shower, the last pieces of the puzzle fall into place. There’s a final twist and a steamy shower fight scene that would make great cinema.

Excerpt:

He held back from the group and scanned the room. His eyes caught mine before I could look away.

I gave a little wave. “Hi again,” I said, so softly I knew he didn’t hear me.

He held up his right hand, made a finger gun, and pointed it at me. Then, he sighted and shot me. Kapow. The corners of his mouth lifted into something too sinister to call a smile, then he turned and walked away. No one else noticed our exchange.

When I was sure his back was to me, I looked at him again. That’s when I saw the name tooled on the back of his belt. José Luis. The hairs on my arms stood up. The similarity of his name to mine was not lost on me. In spite of the heat in the crowded room, a shiver went through me.
